As I sip on a cup of fresh orange blossom lemon tea, I ponder the crippling art of perfection. If there's a perfectionist bone in your body, you know what I’m referring to.
Perfection reminds me of what I haven’t done, or what I procrastinated on until SOS flares erupted in full force. That’s what this piece and morning ritual are about: putting something beautiful, creative, and imperfect forth while giving myself permission to be ok with that. So let’s dive into the mess of the magic.
This morning I cultivated my curiosity in a cup of tea. I’m couch lounging for the next two nights at the Bay Area home of three of my best friends from college (P.S. this Ikea convertible couch is an absolute dream), before heading back to Seattle. Instead of delving into their stashes for my morning tea fix, I happened upon my own ideal cup. With the backyard orange tree bursting with blossoms, I internet-verified through Emily Han's Orange Blossom Tea blog that a recipe for orange blossom tea did in fact exist, and would not send my gut raging to a place of gloom. In fact, fresh orange blossom tea does the exact opposite.
Benefits: calming, digestive, relaxing, glorious aesthetic
Process: easy peasy
Anxieties aside I went for it. I also zested a lemon accidentally instead of an orange in the photographing process —in my defense the lemon tree was very close to the orange tree—which is why what was originally orange blossom tea is now Fresh Orange Blossom Lemon Tea (see recipe below). This happy accident in the process coupled with spilling hot water mid-pour, reveal exactly why striving for perfect isn’t worth it. Initially, a piece of me didn’t want to even start this mini-project because I thought it wouldn’t be "just right." In simply moving through that, I now have a delicious cup of tea and my first blog. In all its imperfect process, this cup of fresh orange blossom lemon tea isn’t what I thought it would be… and that IS “just right.”
